John
Nelson
John Nelson is a highly accomplished music educator with over 30 years of experience in Texas public schools. He currently serves as Head Band Director at Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and Marching Band while overseeing the entire band program.
A graduate of Southwest Texas State University with a degree in Secondary Music Education, John has built a legacy of excellence. Under his direction, the Cy-Fair bands have consistently earned UIL Sweepstakes awards, become Bands of America Regional Finalists and multiple Regional Champions, and advanced as two-time UIL 6A State Marching Championship Finalists. His percussion ensembles have earned numerous class championships in the Texas Color Guard Circuit, achieved WGI World Championship Finalist status, and performed at Music for All’s National Percussion Ensemble Festival.
John is also an entrepreneur and community leader. He owns and operates a successful small business, founded the nonprofit BFND Band Foundation, and serves as a certified financial coach with Ramsey Solutions.
He has received numerous honors for his contributions to music education, including an Award of Educational Excellence from the President of Texas A&M University, induction into the Texas Color Guard Circuit Hall of Fame, and induction into the Cy-Fair ISD Wall of Fame.
John is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Phi Beta Mu.
Above all, John enjoys a fulfilling life on his 6-acre bamboo farm in Texas with his wife, Wendy, and their two sons, Austin and Carter, both proud graduates of the Cy-Fair Band Program.
